As they become more and more popular, fitness trackers are also coming down in price. A great way to record what you are doing, and an even better way to get moving in the first place, fitness trackers can record how fast you are going, how high your heart rate is, how you are sleeping, how many steps you’ve taken and many other parameters. They adhere to the DDW 10 commandments of fitness and weight loss, where commandment 5 says “thou shalt enlist technology to make success easier”. The most expensive can run into hundreds of pounds, but today we’ll look at the best fitness trackers under £50.
– Jawbone upmove. This fitness tracker is shaped like a clip, so there are no cumbersome straps; it’s easy to put on and is also secure, even if you’re doing a Jane Fonda workout. It has a well designed interface, with panels that light up on the front to tell you how you are doing. It can track sleep, but works best as a pedometer. It works well with the companion app, the “smart coach”, to make sure that you are burning enough calories and exercising enough. £40, www.jawbone.com/store
– MisFit Shine. The sleek looking waterproof misfit shine is made from aircraft standard aluminium; it tracks multiple sports including swimming, cycling and running, and lights up to indicate progress. It is small so can fit into a pocket or you can buy the additional wrist strap. £32 from www.store.misfit.com
– Fitbit Zip. Like the Jawbone the fitbit is shaped like a clip so it fits elegantly onto your sporty (or not) outfit. Although limited in some ways it does have GPS and can track runs and walks with the associated app. It is also a very good pedometer. £50 from www.fitbit.com
– Withings Go. The trendy Go has an E ink display that not only helps show how far you have gone but also acts as a watch. It’s water resistant and can go on the wrist or be clipped on to clothing. It can track running, swimming and follow your sleep patterns too. £50 www.withings.com
– Moov Now. The best on test here, the Moov is the most complex tracker at this price point. It tracks a wide range of sports, gives vocal encouragement when you are flagging, can work with a heart rate monitor, is waterproof and can track multiple movements. It can also count reps if you are strength training. The best of the best fitness trackers. £45, www.wiggle.co.uk
