An on/off client of ours (on again soon we hope) sent me this link today. It explains why some of us push ourselves in exercise, regardless of the fact that someone, somewhere, is twice our age and doing it twice as well!
I would urge you to read it, and perhaps you will find that you relate to it hugely, or if you are of the non-exercise disposition, then you will gain an insight into why we do it, and in particular, why people run! For a very small sect of the population, running can be bad for your knees. So can soccer, tennis, skiing, cycling, skating, hiking, and sitting. For the majority of us, however, it’s not. Running is good for lowering cholesterol, increasing lung function, boosting immunity, lowering the risk of certain types of cancer, lowering the risk of a heart attack, losing weight, relieving stress, eliminating depression, and prolonging life. In fact, the number one cause of knee problems in the United States isn’t running: it’s obesity.
But running isn’t for everyone, I get that.
If you can’t run, go ride a bike. If you can’t ride a bike, go swimming. If you can’t swim, take up competitive floor hockey. If you can’t do any of these things, find some activity that you can use to find a little piece of mind. Build robots in your backyard. Become awesome at baking. Try to read 100 novels a year.
Any or all of these activities are a stellar substitute for distance running.
Just please, for the love of bejeezus, spare me (or any other runner you meet) the “bad knee” speech.
