It’s not just our weight that counts, it’s also the size of your waist. Scientists have long warned that excess fat around the middle poses a serious health threat, and in recent blogs we have also looked at this. Now a new study of 350,000 people in Europe has shown that large love handles can double the risk of suffering the risk of an early death, even in people who are not overweight. Women with a waist of 39.4 inches (100cms) were twice as likely to die prematurely as those with 25-26 inch waists. In men those with a 47 inch waistline (120cms) were at double the risk of those with one of 31 to 32 inches (80cm). Overall the research showed that for every 2 inches on the waist the risk of death increased by 17% in men and 13% in women.
