Pilates
German born fitness innovator Joseph H Pilates (1881-1967) developed the Pilates exercise system in the 1920's. Finding massive popularity in the early 1990's (partly due to celebrity endorsements) this form of exercise emphasises the mind - body connection and uses slow controlled movements to tone muscles, in particular the powerhouse muscles in our core (abs, pelvic girdle, lower back). Several muscle groups are engaged simultaneously with deep diaphragmatic breathing making for a holistic mind-body workout. Pilates improves strength, flexibility and balance, and is fabulous for stress reduction, back pain, toning, strength, weight loss and develops functional fitness for daily life.

After years of high-impact make-em-sweat no pain no gain workouts there is great appeal in a slower low impact, sensible approach to health and wellness.
Pilates conditions the body from head to toe. It requires patience and practice but results will follow.
